I think we started reading it on Monday. So far, I'd have to say that I am quite intrigued; especially, about this whole gathering at the table to talk about your "feelings" thing they do EVERY night. 😒
Sadie Campbell
9/17/2014 09:19:57 am
Really, and I thought we had issues. They have a family gathering to talk about their "feelings"? What kind of gibberish is that? I don't know how I could handle that everyday. This is going to be quite interesting. I bet they don't have issues with the citizens committing crimes,if that's even a thing, and getting away with them. They practical turn themselves in. Kevin begins, "Well, I'm feeling really sad because earlier today I lost my best friend John." "Why? What happened?," mother asks. "Well, him and I were playing a game in his living room and he defeated my high score. I felt he had cheated and became really upset." "Did you tell his parents he was cheating?" "They weren't at home. So, I ended up beating him to death with the controllers and came home." I mean really, the words personal, secret, and private are probably not in there dictionaries. At this rate, I think being "removed" is the least of their worries.

To be honest, I'm a little confused about why they'd share there "feelings" at the dinner table. My family we share how our day was but not really our feelings. I'd rather had a personal talk with my parents instead of with my brothers
Jonathan

Dinner for with my parent is maybe 15 minutes of silence, I would be appalled if I even had to do it once in my life, the whole thing just seems kinda useless.

I am quite confused about the book "The Giver", I do not understand how their society works, nor do I understand their rituals work.
Aj
9/19/2014 05:56:46 am
The Giver is a great book so far! I am absolutely stunned by how much this society is organized. Sharing feelings, nursery jobs, specific flight patterns? What caused this to form a type of society. Personally I think that if I HAD to share my feelings everyday I'd gladly be released.

The giver is a good book so far. I'm a little confused on why they talk about there feelings every night. Do they have that much wrong, maybe something happened so they like to always know how everyone is feeling. It might be how like some families when they get how ask how was your day maybe it's like that. I'm not sure. Kinda confused.....

This book is starting to get good. The characters refer other humans as "units", making it feel like people are robots. Everyone has to go through the ceremony of 12, when they finally grow up and start training (possibly for their future job). The book said that animals were imaginary creatures, making me think that this book takes place in some sort of post apocalyptic future.( if I'm right about that then I'm going to freak out)
Sadie
9/19/2014 12:11:10 pm
They might as well be robots. It reminds of that movie, ROBOTS, I think is what it's called. Where the young robot goes into republic city I think, to find Big Bin, was it? It was Big something, I'm not sure. But anyways, his parents had to order him, "the baby unit" and put it together.

9/20/2014 01:56:45 am
This book the giver is ok so far but is a little bit confusing. They dont know what animals are, how are you in a place with no animals? It seems like they are in another world(i guess). They say that "animals" are imangary creatures, that weird because imagionary creatures to us are things we cant see. So far all the (12's) are going to a ceremony of 12 and jonas is nevous about that. This shows what job you will have for them and what jonas talked about in the family feelings meeting.

All I've got to say is, how in the world might they decide who would be good as a birthing mother? I can't imagine any girls wanting to do that job, I know I wouldn't. The really sad part though, is that they don't have much of a choice. Then they just get tossed aside to work for the rest of their lives after birthing kids who they don't even get to see. That is flipping messed up. Dude, it's insulting as far as I see it. I mean, are they even allowed to have a family? If so, maybe they'd like to have their own kids, the ones they gave birth to, you know because it only makes since. You just don't flit mother and child like that. Heartless much?💗
Michelle
9/25/2014 02:46:43 am
Thing is they don't have kids and have that bond that we have with our parents. It is upsetting. This book opens something up that I haven't really thought of before that these kids Lilly and Jonas don't have any clue who their birth moms were. Do they have no urge to see or even know their mom especially Jonas since he is different and has the special eye color.

Basically,Jonas was throwing a apple back and forth with his friend In the play room when he started to notice that the apple was changing while being thrown. He couldn't just shake it off so he decided to take it home and do some investigating but the apple didn't change when he was at home. An announcement later came on addressing that the kids should not take things out of the play area( mostly addressed to him). He couldn't help being curious. What does faded eyes mean in the story?( do they mean gray, blue.) And what does it mean when the elderly are " released "? (are they saying they let them free or kill them.)

9/24/2014 11:46:20 am
The giver is a very different book. I find it very odd of how controlling their society is. I think that their society has gone out of control in that perspective. I am a little confused on how their society works. I think that the book will get a better towards the end of the story or the middle. I think it is weird that the authors animals won't exist in the future. I get this because I Think his book takes place in the future and thishis book is a reflection of what he feels the future would be like.
Sadie
9/24/2014 12:09:43 pm
I don't think I'd want to live in a world with no animals. For starters, what would you eat as a source of meat? You need protein. I'm a meat lover 100% and I don't know about you, but I've got to have my steak, pork, bacon, and baby back ribs! Second, what about nature and it's beautiful creatures. It's the best thing about the world, it's just not the same without it.💗

9/25/2014 02:55:47 am
Jonas talks about how he saw an apple change every time it thrown in the air. He took the apple home, which is against the rules, and inspected it to see if it would change. Sometime later he helped the elderly with his friends for recreational hours. One of the elderly people talked about how some of her friends were "released" recently and said that most of them were very exciting and made her happy. There might be a dark side to all of this. The term "release" probably means that whoever is "released" is going to killed once they are on the other side of the door

Personally I always think back to the movie/book Divergent because they too had a ceremony but even then they chose their life paths and such. Their society was controlled as well and took place in the future. The two feel very similar and so different all at once. Gah, so many emotions.

This's book is just ahocks me at points. Changing apples? Birth mothers?! Who came up with society, I mean think about it is in the future but who wants so much orderly conduct. Are these people really test guinea pigs? I'm think I was absolutely appalled when the realization came to me that a twelve year old could be a birth mother. You thought sixteen and pregnant was bad they should make a reality tv show called twelve and pregnant. I personally believe that Jonas is not as enthused about this society as every one else.

(Intelligible growling), If i had to live in a society where emotions are controlled with the "Pill" and you are subject to harassment by announcements that can cull you out without even saying your name, i would want to just be released the day after I was able to recognize my own environment (A little bit of a run-on). Despite of the obnoxious rules and regulations, the community of "The Giver" is quite quaint and peaceful.

I was surprised by how good The Giver is. It's full of surprises and has a lot of mysteries in it. I would hate to live in a society were your emotions are controlled by a pill and have to be assigned a job I might not even want. I also am extremely curious about what the apple was or is and I have a feeling it's going to be very important to the story along with they lighter eye colors that very few people have. I can't wait to find out what it all means!!!!
Sadie

The giver has been very intriguing so far. There has been many plot twist so far, with the apple to the pill. I would hate to live somewhere where I had no control over my own life and let alone had to bathe old ladies. The pill to control my own emotions is very freaky and I would never want to take this. Maybe towards the end there is a rebellion and the community is broken up.

I thought The Giver was going to be super boring because the cover it gave it that vibe. The society Jonas live in makes me want to cry! It is WAY too perfect, nothing unexpected seems to happen. It seems like they choose for you, so you can't to anything stupid or out of the ordinary. Which takes out the fun in everything. I wouldn't be able to last a day there.

This week a few questions popped into my head as we read "The Giver". Such as "What was the strange difference Jonas noticed while tossing the apple?" and "What do these pills actually do in order to stop these quote-on-quote stirrings?". I'm starting to really wonder what has happened to their society as we continue reading like how everyone must share their feelings and ride only the bike that was assigned to them. Will our society turn into the one that is described in "The Giver"? Because honestly I don't think I'd like living in that society.
Michelle
9/26/2014 03:28:55 pm
Those pills are INSANE. Plus I think those pills were designed to control normal human hormones and attractions towards one another to be honest because of course they decide your "spouse" if one can even call it that for you. I don't think any of us would enjoy living like Jonas does...
B Abramowich

Michelle
9/26/2014 03:27:10 pm
The Giver surprised me because I thought it would be uninteresting. It's scary how controlling this society that Jonas and Lilly live in is. I was thinking about the book and how these kids don't have any clue who their birth mother is and I wondered do they ever think about it? Does Jonas in particular because he is different? Also, how do their "parents" show love, exhibit love to one another when their partner was chosen for them based on their actions previously in their life. Sure, history repeats itself but how you act as an adolescent or a kid is definitely not how you would respond to situations as an adult in a family situation. It's crazy how unusual this world is. I just don't comprehend it.

This book is talking about families that share their feelings every night at the dinner table, young teenagers bathing older people of opposite genders, and people who get in trouble for throwing an apple. So far I can tell they live in a very open society and for the most part, the kids have a much higher maturity level. If one of us went to give an old woman a bath we'd be snickering. Very good book so far.

9/28/2014 05:24:10 pm
Okay kiddo since you missed out on probably the MOST AWKWARD teacher reading aloud thing ever I'll fill ya in. Basically Jonas had the equivalent of a dream where he asked the girl (can't remember her name for the life of me...) to undress and get into the tub. It was the same girl who was bathing the older people with him that one day. Basically after sharing this dream with his parents like he's forced too they pulled him aside labeled it a "stirring" and said he needed the medical treatment which is this pill that his parents both take daily and that now he too will take daily. Supposedly this pill from what I infer controls human attractions towards each other so that later on in life it will be easier for their leaders to assign people a partner/spouse and no one will complain b/c they are all brainwashed by said pill but I don't know yet this is just what I think the pill does. We didn't read what it does yet. Also, still clueless about that apple.

In different ages you receive different gifts. Like when your 8 you get a jacket with pockets so you keep hold of your belongings. When your 9 you get a bike showing you have now joined the community. When your 10 girls and boys get hair cuts. Boys lose their little long hair and girls lose their braids. The kids that are 12's get an as sighed job. Jonas has to now take a pill which I think controls your thoughts, feelings and actions.
Sadie
10/2/2014 02:50:36 pm
Yeah, what's up with that getting a gift when you reach a certain age? I mean, are they really restricting what toys kids get and when? Dude and don't get me started on when the get their hair cuts and clothes. What about expressing their sense of individuality through their clothes and hairstyles. I've got to have my shopping malls which I bet they don't even have😭

This is really starting to get interesting. Apparently when kids reach a certain age, they have to take pills that control their dreams. Just one question, WHAT KIND OF SOCIETIY IS THIS?! There are some strange things going on in this book and I want to really find out how this is going to go. I still want to find out what it means when someone is "released".

I really hate how controlled this society is. They show that you can't really express your feelings or thoughts. Every aspect of your life is determined for you and you have no say in it. Their society seems so bland and predictable. The fact that they are basically being controlled is ticking me off right now. And then you have the gifts you get when you turn a certain age. You get a bike when you're nine, a new hairstyle when you're ten, seven is a jacket with buttons on the front. This world makes me feel some type of way...

Jonas found out about the pill he has to take I think he thought that taking the pill would make him look like a freak but once he thought about it he realized that almost everyone takes it and really he just fits it. The society the live in is very controlling and there's one thing I am still wondering. Who runs the society or who created the rules? This cant just be a place where theres no one in charge, but if someone is in charge who makes them follow these "rules". This is just a very confusing society

I wonder what kind of medical treatment Jonas thought he going to undergo. He was afraid that he would miss the ceremony meaning a treatment of more than a few days, perhaps a full psychological exam. Only if we had a way to tell what he thought about treatment before he knew about the pill.

Feeling like I have to do another one because this book is just downright upsetting. Seriously thinking that this boy will be the someone who stands up and takes a stand to this weird place he lives in because he seems different like her just processes things differently. It feels as if Jonas is the only one questioning everything around him but he is being told that is just how it goes so he shuts his mouth. It is odd that the society is like this and now I am wondering what major/catastrophic event occurred for their world to become this controlling and emotionless?

In the book, The Giver, their society takes away the freedom of choice. I am quite confused about what occupation Jonas will receive at his ceremony. A lot of the scenes in the book are a little, extremely uncomfortable to read out loud. I happen to believe that this community is an attempted utopia in the distant future.

The giver is starting to get interesting. I hate how controlling the society they live in is thought. I feel like the people are being monitored all the time. I am also really weirded out about the releasing of people. At first I thought that It was when someone died like a funeral, and when they said that the guy walked through the curtains i think that's a little odd I wonder in they execute them. But yeah I am really excited to read more of this book.

So, Jonas gets the job of the receiver of memory. Paper entry that is a very serious job seeing how the elder said that he had to go through physical pain. Also, while Jonas was on the stage, he noticed that the crowd changed for just a split second. This is probably when the "Giver" aspect of this story is going to begin.

I really like this book but one question I have is what is a receiver?!? Is the man who is the old receiver who's teaching Jonas now the giver? Also who would want to Be a bith mother?!? Like honestly. Do they not understand the pain of giving birth? Do they enjoy the pain? That s really weird if they did though.
B Abramowich
10/11/2014 11:05:09 am
They obviously don't understand the reality of birth or death, do they? That is part of what makes this book so disturbing and ominous even when the people are all smiley and happy. The irony is thick!
Blake
10/9/2014 03:14:42 am
In the giver Jonas was a receiver of memories and everyone was shocked. I me still confused on what even he has to do. If the name is giver, then how is he a receiver, does it somehow change into another role and they appeal?

Jonas was called last in the ceremony of twelve because he got a very important job as the receiver of memory. He will be mostly isolated from all other people. They also said that the reviver of memory will have physical pain. Will he really want to go through a job knowing he going to have physical pain and knowing that he doesn't even know much of what he doing? He does have some kind of ability because first the apple he was playing with changed and now the people in the audience at the ceremony change for a second. We will probably find out more about that ability he has.

Dude, they call being the receiver an honor? It should be more then that considering what they have to go though. I mean, they are like, 'why don't we lie and keep all these secrets from you guys and when we find someone "special", we'll assign them to be a receiver. We'll let them take on the stress of dealing with all the community's terrible crimes against humanity.' How do they expect you to deal with all that? What if you were to find out about what they are doing? How are they expecting you to deal with knowing the truth and not being able to tell anyone?😤 Yeah, some honor that is😒

The giver is starting to get interesting. I think that Jonas is given the special job to hold info that will change his view on his society. I don't really know but there society is giving me an odd feeling I think something's wrong. Also how controlling it is that just gives me the feeling that there hiding something. I think Jonas is going to realize there wrong doings.

Hold up, why is the book called The Giver when his job is the receiver of memory. What memory is he receiving? I wonder of the chose him for this job because they knew he could endure the pain involved with this job. I find it interesting when they announced his job they didn't say he was assigned but chosen. Maybe that sentence has me feeling things because that really stuck with me. I wonder if the book will go into detail about the pain and what type of physical pain Jonas will go through. A different point is total isolation. We are discussing about a 12/13 year old that will know be totally separated from anything he has ever known, put through some sort of unexplainable pain and mind you only be in the company of some "special" old man. I also think that in someway he'll give back the memory of the society and people to the members of the community and that's why the book is called The Giver. He will realize after all the raining that he can't just keep this information he needs to share it for the better of everybody. I don't know that is just my prediction.

In our class book "The Giver", Jonas has been selected to be "The Receiver of Memory". I am quite confused about what this means. When he goes home he reads that he can lie. Jonas is confused if the adults also received this same statement. He can also ask anything and get an answer.

He is a receiver of memory!!!! The book is called the giver yet he is a receiver? It doesn't make sense. So he has the most important job in his community which it is a crazy community. Why can't you be what you choose? It's unfair but I guess if you grew up in that type of society you would be used to that type of community. If you put someone from now in that type of community they wouldn't understand what to do and would probably be released.

So this is week in "The Giver" Jonas finally became a 12!!!! Having being assigned "the Receiver of Memory" he must go through physical and emotional pain. My question is "what are they going to put Jonas through like what types of challenges must he go through in order to become Receiver of Memory?" I'm still struggling to see how Jonas will feel physical pain in his training. If he is just receiving memories then how will it will be pain? As the chapter ended the man transferred his memory into Jonas from his hand in his back. This was very confusing almost as if the colony was very advanced in this category.

Jonas is in the middle of his training for the receiver of memory. The elder put his hand on Jonas's back to take him to the memory of snow. Jonas is still a sleep in the process but can vision it like he is actually there. He sees snow, he's on a sled and loves the experience. Now that he experienced snow the elder has lost that memory but has many more in his head. Jonas has more memories to experience throughout the training.

The whole procces of having one lay flat upside down bare-backed and have another lay theirs hand on the other's back to transit memory seems propostourus, or is it?. Since the spinal cord lays against the inside of the back, this gigantic jumble of nerves connects straight to your cerebral cortex (brain). Memories may be able to be transmitted via the spine if a technique is perfected enough, but the whole idea of feeling the snow and seeing it in person is probably not possible.

Since nobody is addressing the topic of his "seeing beyond" I will. 😊 When Jonas sees some item or someone even change what exactly does he see? With the apple the book only let on that he saw it change in midair for a second, never saying how or to what it changed into.mrecently he saw Fiona "change" and this book leaves all of us clueless as to HOW SHE CHANGED. *gah*
Sadie
10/16/2014 03:01:20 am
Yeah, I totally agree. When ever he sees a change, they shouldn't just let it be, so suspenseful😱. Also what's the deal with them not seeing color? Was it so bad they decided to get rid it of and the sun as well? Dude if it's even possible, how does one even get rid of the sun? Sunshine is good, you need it. I mean, if they don't have that, where exactly does their daylight come from? 💗

I'm really happy that we finally found out why the book is called "The Giver". But now I want to know who made the community and why they wanted sameness. Plus I think that some sort of war happened and that is the pain that is so great that the giver can't describe. I'm also wondering if that's what he gave to the failed receiver was memories of pain that was to much for her to handle it and she died. I'm very confused about how the giver can transmit memories just by touching Jonas's bare back with his hands.

The giver is extremely exciting now i think that Jonas is going to stand up for what he believes in. He is going to tell the community about colors and all the things he learns and there going to fight to get them back. I think that when the giver says Jonas will experience pane I think he means like getting shot, war, and maybe Evan watching someone die. I also believe that he will start asking questions about what happens to people when they get released. I predict when he finds the answer he won't be happy but very upset.

In the book, The Giver, I feel that their society is deprived of what makes us human. They don't even see color! Besides, what makes us different is what makes us who we are, they shouldn't try to conceal them. On another note, why did they change the earth so much? Its all just flat. What I'm saying is that I don't get it.

Maybe sometimes we do not appreciate the problems we have trying to deal with people who are different. Would sameness solve the problem? While their lives do seem peaceful and full of (ignorant) bliss, I have to agree that they have lost their humanity. The joy in life is sometimes appreciating the "ups" after dealing with the "downs." They don't seem to have much of either.

Jonas has learned about colors. I'm sitting here wondering what is going on in this community. Things are really strange, I mean what is this "sameness" that the Giver keeps talking about? As we read "The Giver" this week, it talked about how Jonas continued to see flashes of something describable when he looked at certain objects. Jonas later found out that the indescribable flashes were colors that he was seeing. This made me wonder "Do the people in that society only see in black and white?" It also made me wonder "If they do see in black and white, why did society and the scientists that create the gene pools take away the ability to see color?"
Hazel
10/17/2014 05:40:54 pm
I am incredibly bothered that they only see black and white. No one in the community can see the beauty that is colors. Im happy Jonas is beginning to question things because thats when he begins to see all the flaws in the society. Its ridiculous how people decided it'd be great to only see black and white and have everything chosen for you.

I wonder what sort of perquisites it would take in order to be the Reciver of Memory and then the Giver. I know you would have to be able to "see beyond," but you would have to be able to be secretive and not anyone about training and post-training experiences. Furthermore, you have to be able to do what I call the-memory-transit-via-spinal-cord-thing ( there's a plentiful amount of hyphens, but it's still one word). Those who are "selected" must also be open-minded, if you were stuck ina black and white world, it would be very challenging to have the knowledge of a full spectrum of colors.

In the giver Jonas is getting very anxious to see all of the colors. He notices that his giver is in pain and he tries to relive his pain by transferring it but it is to much for the giver to bare. But no pain, no stress, no decisions to be made. Not having to deal with relationships and highs and lows of emotions. I still think this receiver job is like the worst job you could get. They must not have hearts to think its ok to making someone go throughout such torture. Oh yeah, I forgot. THEY DONT HAVE EMOTIONS. That's so ridiculous I don't even know what to say about it. If I were Jonas, I would totally tell everyone about everything. Jonas is still in training and is receiving pain from the giver. He just felt pain when he fell off that sled and hurt his leg. This kind of pain was still with him when he woke from that memory. When he found out about the sunburn it was so little it didn't stay with him like this did. Jonas also knows about colors so he is trying to get his memory transferred to his friend and family but it doesn't work. Jonas has realized that his family has never felt pain and he feels very lonely about that.

It is really weird how Jonas completely experiences the memory even though it wasn't his. It is probably much like our strong memories and how they are attached to feelings and emotions. We just aren't used to having that transferred--even when someone tells us about something.
Michelle
10/23/2014 03:17:37 am
Whoa, Hazel and I were wondering where someone goes when they get released. Do some elders believe this is like an after-life or heaven of some sorts? Do they just place the poor infant, or elderly person outside the dome and say "See ya never!"? This is frustrating. I also think that at some point Jonas will relieve a memory of someone being released and then that will, in turn be revealed to us in the book. Gah I cannot wait!! It is truly upsetting the community places the burden on one/two people. They basically give up their own wisdom to one person just so they don't feel pain. No one in their world has emotional, physical or mental pain. All physical pain is treated in an instant so it doesn't really count

The giver is a really good book and I think that it uses suspense really well because it the kind of book that you never want to put down because if you do then your left wondering what happens next. Almost every chapter it leaves you hanging. Also I am feeling that Jonas is going to end up changing the community. For example giving back color to all the people in his community. I predict that not all people will be happy that Jonas destroyed all the sameness and he will make enemy's. I think that Jonas will be strongly supported by the giver but not at first only after the giver realizes that what Jonas is doing is right.

Jonas has learned about all of the colors. Now he wants to learn about other stuff. He wants to get rid of the pain that the Giver is carrying. The Giver said something about not being able to protect Jonas forever. Soon enough, Jonas learned about pain, skin scraping; bone breaking pain. He kept wondering why the other people don't experience these memories, but the giver just said that is ow the community works. That night Jonas watched over Gabe to make sure that he didn't have any trouble sleeping. During that time Jonas accidently gave Gabe the memory of sailing in a lake. Jonas did not want to mention this to the Giver so he just went back to his duty.

Jonas is learning about his new job as the Receiver of Memory and while getting all the memory of the people he learns that there is pain he is supposed to receive. When he sees that the Giver is stressed or in pain he asks to take it away and the giver transfers painful memories to Jonas. One time Jonas was receiving the pain and he was in a cold clear field where there are people lying down begging for water. Jonas was considerate and gave a boy some water. I like this book so far it opens up new doors and grabs your attention so you're interested in finding out what happens next.

I'm extremely happy that we found out what kind of pain The Giver was talking about!!! I think Jonas and the Giver both end up releasing memory's of pain to everyone in the community to relive their own pain. Also that fact that everyone wants sameness then releases the lighter of the two twins makes no sense at all.

As usual I have more questions this week while we read "The Giver". The biggest question I had was "Why was the giver in so much pain over a memory he was given such a long time ago?" And why is the giver rushing Jonas into all of the painful memories all at once. I can't wait to find out what happens next that Jonas will learn and discover.

There are so many different types of pain that can be felt so I'm glad that we finally got to see one. I feel bad for Jonas that he's going to feel/see some terrible things that only he will have to deal with until a new receiver comes along. Like the people in the society probably don't know what real emotional pain is. Yeah they might of scraped their knee once but have they ever experience a broke heart? Do they even know what love is?

This week in The Giver Jonas was introduced to more colors and started to them more often, he also (without technically breaking any rules) tried to show color to Asher and convey memories to his father and sister. He is also introduced to pain as he asks the Giver what pains him so much and if he can help get rid of some of his pain. He also accidentally (at first) starts to give the new child a memory then realizing whats happened he gives him the complete memory.

Jonas has experienced grandparents and knows that they are the parents of his parents. Jonas has also experienced love but cannot ask anyone if they love him. Only if they enjoy him or something like that. Jonas talks to his little brother gave telling him all the memories he knows and Jonas decides that he wants to change things and have other people know the memories he knows. The next morning Jonas didn't take his pill he threw it away.

I think Jonas is not capable of keeping these huge secrets! He wants to share with someone! I also think the pills control all high and low emotions, so the most the parents can really feel is enjoyment or satisfaction. Sad . . .

I wonder why Jonas keeps giving Gabriel the memories, what will happen if the Giver finds out? I really hope that Jonas gets released so I can find out what happens when you do. I personally think his parents are being uncaring because they see their son is in anguish and they aren't doing anything, I mean I know Jonas says he's fine but obviously he's not.

It was disappointing in a sense because it was so saddening! The way the nurturer was so nonchalant about it really frustrates me. Yes, the suspense was worth it in a way.

I am greatly enjoying this book, it is very unique. The only thing similar to it that I've seen is Divergent. I feel that Jonas will get in trouble for not taking his pill and for giving memories to Gabe. However I do not understand how the memories work.

Jonas has exerienced pain, love, colors, and many more memories. I'm still wondering why this entire community doesn't experience the things that Jonas and the Giver experience. I know about the "sameness" thing, but why exactly did the community do this? Why did most of the Earth decide to make everything the same and so strange? I guess we'll have to find out later in the book or in the next book, hopefully.

What is this? Is he getting feelings for Fiona?!?! How come nobody else had thought about what would happen if they didn't take the pills? Wy was he the only one that thought about this? I mean even if I wasn't the receiver, to have any of those memories I'd still be thinking about all of these things! I hope he'd tell someone so someone else could not take the pills with him and he wouldn't be the only one. What if Fiona did it and him and Fiona caught feelings for each other!!! 🙊 The questions!! 😶

So this week in "The Giver," Jonas and the whole community got an unexpected day off from their usual duties. As children, Jonas's friends, and Jonas were playing war games, it brought back the painful memory of war but only Jonas seemed to realize the true meaning of their game. This made me wonder "Why aren't the children in Jonas's society educated on past experiences in history such as wars?" Jonas also denies the offer his friends gave him when they asked if he wanted to ride their bikes by the stream. Was there any particular reason as to why Jonas denied the offer? I honestly can't wait to find out what Jonas learns about next.

For starters, the way the deal with love is the one thing I'd have to agree with. Jonas doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't want love. It's not always all unicorns and sparkles. Love is a terrible thing unless it with Jesus. I don't think people know how to handle love and as a result, It often ruins peoples lives. There's just not enough good people in this world to handle it the way it should be. If there were, it wouldn't be so terrible, but instead, awesome and would make life a whole lot easier. Love is a big issue that really gets me going when I start talking about it, so I better stop now😋.

That is something that I didn't think about when I was reading, Sadie. I can completely see your point, but I think most of our struggles come from not having Jesus be the first love and putting our earthly relationships first. Love is not all bad!

Jonas decided not to take his pill that suppresses his feelings and now he can permanently see all the colors. He's not connecting to his friends anymore because of all the memories he has do pain and suffering. He went to hang out with his friends and they were playing a game were they were shooting at each other but all Jonas could think of was they boy on the battle field asking for water.

This week in the giver, The Giver told Jonas about what happened the previous time the receiver of memory failed and about how much it hurt him and the community even though there wasn't many memories released, they also agree that Jonas should stay safe because he has many more memories than the previous receiver so if he released his memories the results would be devastating. I predict that something will happen in which Jonas will release his memories.
Carri

Jonas has found out what the meaning of release is! Jonas watch a twin have a needle to the forehead and end up dying. This reminded Jonas of the war memory and wanted to cry. My comment on the giver finding out 10 years ago that the receiver before Jonas offered to release herself is a very sad thing because some of those memories went out to the community and he is responsible for keeping the memories away from the community. I wonder what would happen if Jonas released himself? or if he went to his father and told him what he saw and how upset he was? What would Jonas's father say if Jonas told him what he saw? I predict that Jonas is going to act very different around his family now that he knows this devastating fact and could find out many more.

The releasing of the newborn was bittersweet. Very depressing may I add, I was almost in tears! It's okay because I feel like finally we have a sense of how dark their world has become. The man releasing the newborn was so nonchalant about the entire process. It bothers me to no end! Where does the released person go after sliding down what I infer to be a trash chute? Why is there a need to release the people? Does the body not eventually die as ours do? Goodness just as I thought I was starting to understand the book it becomes even more confusing! Blake and I were talking, that girl Rosemary applied to commit suicide. She did stick the needle in her arm herself. Honestly the giver nor can Jonas say she gave up because she wasn't brave. That girl had some serious courage to go through with injecting herself with the serum. Question for everyone: would you inject yourself or have somebody else do it for you? Personally, I would inject myself if I had to die that way.

I KNEW IT! I JUST KNEW IT!! I knew that the term "being released" meant that the people got killed. How can these people even sleep at night knowing that they kill innocent babies, children, and elderly people?! My instincts knew that something was wrong with this community and they were right!
Blake
11/6/2014 02:05:37 am
This week in The Giver Jonas had watched his dad “release” a new born twin. His father stuck a needle into the baby’s skull and injected something that killed him. What kid would want to see their own father kill a baby just because it weighed less. This to me is a sick community instead of just letting old people die from old age they kill them! I hope Jonas leaves and the community ends up killing themselves from the memories.

I can’t believe that when they release people they actually stick them with a needle that kills them. I mean Jonas had to watch his father release a baby just because the baby was smaller than it’s twin. I wonder where exactly Jonas plans to go after he leaves the community. I’m also thinking about why the Giver wants to stay and help when he could just leave.
Destiny D.
11/6/2014 02:24:46 am
Omg how could you kill a poor baby! I thought they wanted sameness. What is up with this community? Have they gone insane? First they wanted sameness but now they want to kill a baby because they look alike. I also am wondering that since Rosemary requested a release and she got it and then she did it by herself, is that like she committed suicide? This books getting really depressing and I cannot wait until the movie.

The giver is really kinda sad because Jonas and the giver are plotting a plan for Jonas to leave forever. I don't think that there plan is going to happen because then there wouldn't really be anything to make a second book about. I am wondering that if Jonas leaves there community and does not die will it his memory's still go out in the open for everyone. Also if the giver has many more memory's the why doesn't he go and let Jonas stay and help everyone. I don't know but I do know I am very excited to finish this book.

I just knew there was something fishy about being released😱. What is wrong with these people! I think someone needs to tell them that they are taking the wrong pills.😜 They are a bunch of zumbots living in an insane community. Who's brilliant idea was it to kill a newborn twin because they don't want two people looking alike? Does that mean they don't kill a twin if they a fraternal twins? I'd be surprise if they didn't. Not knowing any better is the worst excuse ever. Dude who cares about them, if I were Jonas, I'd kidnap the Giver and leave so they can deal with all the memories on their own. Better yet, just come up with a way to release the memories to everyone without leaving. It would be nice watching them in utter chaos.😤😇

The Giver this past week has been really depressing. First with the killing of the twin, then finding out Rosemary was the givers daughter. I think it's disgusting how they will kill a poor helpless child just because they don't want sameness. It's even sadder that Rosemary killed herself because the pain of the memories were unbearable. And the fact that rosemary was the givers daughter also doesn't help. Maybe that's why he's didn't like giving her hurtful memories. It makes more sense that it was his daughter because it seemed a little odd he'd love a child basically.

The Giver has honestly given me constant heart break. When they killed the twin boy and Jonas's father had no remorse about that I was extremely astonished. How can you do that to an innocent child and be so happy about it?????? 😢 I was surprised when the Giver told Jonas about Rosemary, but today I almost had a heart attack when he said Rosemary was his daughter and he was going to ask for release. I am honestly sitting on the edge of my seat enthralled by the aspect of Jonas escaping and I have been wanting for that to happen for the longest time. I am also curious as to what Jonas's mother would say about Jonas's dad killing new born infants?

When Rosemary was released, it made me wonder what type of chemical could of been used in the syringe?. Lethal Injection uses a quad team of chemicals in it purposes. First off, an anesthetic called sodium thiopental is used to neutralize pain receptors to comply with the 8th amendment. After the anesthetic, a saline solution is used to push the sodium thiopental through the body faster, then comes pancurinium bromide, then another saline flush, and finally potassium chloride. In the Giver, the Syringe must contain all of these chemicals inside of it, or a chemical that causes the body to limp right after the initial injection.

"The Giver" still has not let our class down in leaving us in suspense. In the past couple of days it has described release process and has revealed more about the Giver's life. One fact of which was the fact that the past failure, Rosemary, was the Giver's daughter. So as usual these events have left me with a few questions to ask. Such as, "Is it related members of family that are selected to become the next Receiver of Memory?" If this is the case that leaves me with another question, "Is Jonas related to the Giver in any way?"

You have all done a great job with the blog this week. As several of us are reading the Unwind series, I can't help but compare these two books as we watch science manipulate humanity. It also relates well to The Monkey's Paw and being careful what you wish for! I'm sure some days we all wish for emotional stability and peace in our lives, but at what cost? What about our current policies and hot-button topics in the news such as abortion and our health care policy that some say will limit health care for the elderly?

Jonas's father does not know that Jonas has learned what releasing is and watched his own father kill a child. Now he is disgusted that his own father voted to kill Gabe. When he's finally ready to leave he brings Gabe on the journey with him. I think Jonas did this because he knows what love is and nobody else does.

Jonas has just found out that Gabe was up for release but that would interfer with his plans so he takes Gabe with him on the escape. Jonas helps Gabe and himself survive by transferring memories into him so he will sleep better and feel warm. I have no connections with this book. My comment on this book is it wasn't too bad but some parts it was boring. I like how Jonas cares so deeply to help people such as his brother. I predict that since they have just arrived to somewhere else they will experience it but in the next book I think the people in his old community are going to start getting the memories. Now his community will be confused and his family will wonder where he is and realize he escaped and put a search out for him.

This week Jonas saw what happens when people get released by watching his father kill a baby. Jonas and the Giver devise a plan for Jonas to leave the community while the giver stays to help the people deal with the memories Jonas will release, but after discovering that Gabriel will be released before Jonas leaves he decides to steal Gabriel and Leave ahead of schedule. After trudging through miles of snow with Gabriel Jonas barely makes it to another community who is celebrated Christmas. The End

Boy was that a close call. I don't know how Jonas managed to keep his cool. If it were me, I would have been like, "Agh😒, you disgust me. How could you do something so horrible and smile about it? Don't you dare start talking to him like that you pshco. What's wrong with you?"

I agree with you girl, how can the father be so calm about "oh by the way because you can't behave I'm going to inject you with a needle so you die." I mean I understand if you grew up to do that and you were trained but do these people have any compassion?

I have but one thing to say..... WHY DID IT END!?!?!?!?!? I am extremely disappointed it ended on a cliffhanger. I am shocked though that he found a sled..in the middle of no where...on a mountain...IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. I wonder if Jonas actually found another community not the "elsewhere"? Gabriel you can tell is a major character and really influenced Jonas's decisions on whether or not to return to the community. In a sense it seems that Jonas takes up that parental role for Gabriel not only now but before in the community. I am also curious as to what is happening in the community right now with all the memories of war and hunger being transmitted to the people. The question is how much does Jonas's parents care that Jonas is missing and Gabriel as well?

I'm really upset with how the author left us on a cliffy! THAT IS CRUEL!!! I this that elsewhere is the place where the giver felt, love at Christmas time. Possibly the giver had the memory because he actually experienced it, like it was his own memory? I'm so curious with how Gabe and Jonas proceed with life there, will they even get accepted into the community? If that place is sort of like how our life is, would they end up in an orphanage? I'm so so so excited to read the second book and see the movie!! Btw, is the movie in black and white??

The Giver, I am so happy that we finished The Giver although it was a real Clift hanger. I am defiantly going to read the next books in the series. I think it is kind of weird that the sled was waiting at the top of the hill because the sled was a memory, so it already happened. That fact would lead me to believe that the sled would at least be at the bottom of the hill, and that maybe Jonas was dreaming of the memory's he once possessed. I don't know but I am really excited to find out

REALLY?!? Another book that ends in a cliffhanger?!? Okay so I understand that Jonas and Gabe have finally reached their final destination and will now be safe, but what is so different about their final destination? Will they be able to have emotions, feelings, and finally be able to think and decide on their own matters? I have so many questions like what will happen with Gabe and Jonas. Can we please read the second book? Maybe then some of my questions will be answered.

That cliffhanger was honestly so rude and uncalled for. I want to know what the Elsewhere is and how it differs from the original community? What if its not real and just a mirage and they didn't get there. All these what if question are running through my head and they are never going to be answered and that upsets me so much! At least Jonas and Gabe got to escape that horrible place and (maybe) go somewhere better.

I still cannot get over the fact that the book is over. Whenever we first started reading The Giver I was a little iffy about it because it was science fiction and I'm not really into it but then when we got to where he was assigned the reciever I got into it more. What I'm trying to understand more is why in the world would you "realese" a baby because they were peaceful at night. -.-
Ethan :(

REAAAALLLY?!?!?!?!?! A CLIFF HANGER????? And the second book has nothing to do with the first. 10 out of 10 would NOT recommend that ending. Jonas and Gabe have finally reached were they were going but what is that place, the elsewhere? What is to become of the community now that all the memories have returned to them? Did the community pick a new receiver and "release" the Giver? I have so many questions that need to be answered!!!!

I checked out comments on the other books in the series, and we are going to read all four. I didn't want us to continue and be disappointed! I guess the next one doesn't have a clear connection, but the third one pulls things together a little bit more, and the fourth one explains everything. SO -- we will continue to read! I know -- I thought I remembered more of an ending myself. It will be interesting to see the movie!

The elsewhere seems to be a land that uses certain parts that reside in the grey matter to create the surroundings Jonas described (ex. the sled and hill and the houses that seemed inviting to Jonas). The elsewhere may contain technology that posses the ability to track, extract, and output brainwaves to create the area around those in it. Which ever way, we can only suspect. Comments are closed.
